In 2003, the City adopted the Driver Village Initiatives Plan. The existing plan includes recommendations related to maintaining and enhancing the quaint, rustic, small town character; supporting and improving the Kings Highway commercial crossroads; calming traffic; making streets pedestrian friendly; resolving storm drainage problems; promoting appropriate, rural-scaled infill development; improving and connecting parks and trails; and planning for regional transportation improvements.
Planning Process
The second Village Area Plan update will be for the Village of Driver. This plan will be developed throughout the end of 2026 and into mid 2027. An online community survey is expected to be available to the public in the fall of 2026 and public meetings are anticipated to be scheduled in spring 2027. The planning process is illustrated below with approximate dates for each specific phase detailed in the process paragraphs below. There are three distinctive phases to each plan, with public engagement planned at various points in each phase.
(Re)Visioning
While a vision for the Driver village area was developed in the previous Village Area Plan, a lot has happened in the intervening 23 years. In re-visioning, site visits and a village assessment will be conducted to establish the baseline conditions. A community survey will also be made available to solicit information from residents, business owners, and other stakeholders.
Test Ideas
Based on the initial input from the first phase, a number of development scenarios for the future of Driver will be developed. In early 2027, the conceptual development scenarios, or test ideas, will be further developed and refined at a public workshop in the Driver area. Finalize
After review with the public, the test ideas will be modified and translated into a draft Village Area Plan. The Driver Village Area Plan will be presented prior to consideration by the Planning Commission and City Council for adoption.
